VDR is a gene which encodes for a vitamin D receptor protein. This protein regulates calcium absorption and bone growth. A variant of the gene, rs2228570 (FokI polymorphism), is associated with reduced bone mineral density in white prepubescent girls.

The hnRNP C1/C2 component of the nuclear vitamin D receptor complex interacts with promoter regions of genes that are responsive to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 and can induce their transcription.
